Objectives

  • Describe the basic clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of penicillin G including benzathine penicillin G and its formulations.
  • Identify and discuss the clinical indications for use for benzathine penicillin G, its priority indications, and drug alternatives for lower priority uses.
  • Identify important aspects of drug shortages in the US and highlight the national shortage of benzathine penicillin.
  • Outline the current epidemiology, diagnosis, and clinical management of Syphilis- including in pregnancy- during drug shortages.
