CLINICAL COMMUNICATION FOR PHARMACISTS: ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPIES (PART 1)
Objectives
- List FDA-approved, commercially available protease inhibitors (PIs), integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs), and miscellaneous antiretroviral (ARV) agents.
- Explain the basic pharmacology of PIs, INSTIs, and miscellaneous ARVs, focusing on their mechanisms of action, primary metabolic pathways, and significant drug-drug interactions.
- Describe the clinical placement of PIs, INSTIs, and miscellaneous ARVs in therapy by comparing their barriers to resistance and patient-specific factors.
- Recognize, given a patient case, the optimal initial antiretroviral regimen for a treatment-naïve HIV patient by prioritizing patient-specific data and current clinical guidelines.
