Objectives
- Compare the pharmacokinetic features of benzodiazepines and phenobarbital.
- Identify the various dosing strategies for phenobarbital or the benzodiazepine of choice for the treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
- Evaluate the place in therapy for phenobarbital versus benzodiazepine based current evidence for the management of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
- Given a patient case, determine the most appropriate agent(s) for the treatment of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome based on patient related factors.
